TS Conductor has started operating its new advanced-conductor factory in Hardeeville, South Carolina. The opening on 13 May brings a second American production location into service alongside the company's original manufacturing base and headquarters in Huntington Beach, California.
A phased investment in conductor manufacturing
The facility manufactures AECC conductors, which use an aluminium-encapsulated carbon core. Manufacturing Dive included the launch in its May review of factory openings, reporting that the initial expansion could increase production capacity by up to ten times relative to the first plant. The figure describes manufacturing capacity; it is not a measure of the extra electricity already flowing through a utility's network.
The company separates the investment into three stages. Its announcement assigns $42 million to the first phase and $134 million to the complete planned project. The latter amount therefore describes the wider expansion, rather than expenditure completed at the opening ceremony.
Recruitment and preparation for production
Local recruitment preparations preceded the launch. In March, the city advertised an event organised with readySC and the Technical College of the Lowcountry, covering three groups of jobs:
- Machine operators working on production equipment.
- Maintenance technicians supporting the factory's machinery.
- Quality inspectors checking manufacturing output.
A subsequent readySC operator notice explains the practical work behind these roles: setting up equipment, monitoring production, carrying out inspections and recording machine settings and quality data. It also identifies safety checks and training as part of the position. This recruitment information provides a more specific picture of factory work than an overall employment projection alone.
The manufacturing expansion and recruitment programme concern the supply of conductors. Individual grid projects will still require their own engineering and installation decisions; opening a factory does not by itself commission a transmission upgrade.
