Covered fertilizer storage
Covered fertilizer storage

OTEKO plans to bring its covered fertilizer warehouse at the port of Taman in Russia to design capacity during 2026, Interfax reported on 5 February, citing the company. The facility is designed to hold 300,000 tonnes at one time. The announcement concerns the warehouse's operating development, rather than the first handling of fertilizer at the terminal.

A storage milestone after the first shipments

In a statement dated 10 September 2025, OTEKO reported loading an initial 52,000-tonne consignment of compound fertilizer for Southeast Asia. At that stage, cargo arriving in railway hopper wagons was transferred through a dedicated line using a direct handling arrangement, with covered storage planned as a subsequent step.

The distinction matters for reading the new timetable. Fertilizer traffic could begin before the warehouse reached its intended operating level. Conversely, a warehouse becoming available does not establish how much cargo has already passed through it.

Different measures of capacity

The company has described ten storage sections, ship consignments of up to 120,000 tonnes and a design fertilizer-handling rate of 5 million tonnes annually. These are three separate measures:

  • Storage describes how much material can be held simultaneously.
  • A vessel consignment describes one shipment.
  • Annual handling describes cargo passing through the facility over time.

For scale, dividing the stated annual handling capacity by the stated storage capacity gives about 16.7 full-stock equivalents per year. That is an illustrative calculation from design figures, not a forecast of inventory turnover. Actual stocks need not fill every section together, and a port can receive and dispatch cargo continuously.

What the announcement establishes

The February report identifies 2026 as the target year but does not give a specific date for reaching the warehouse's design level. It also does not provide a fertilizer throughput result for the whole of 2026. The next meaningful operating figures will therefore be actual tonnes handled over a stated period and the warehouse's confirmed availability, measured separately from its maximum storage specification.
