Russia intends to advance research operations at the PIK reactor and the NICA collider by the end of 2026, Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko said at the International Youth Festival in Yekaterinburg. Interfax reported his statement on September 14. The report sets out a year-end target; it is not confirmation that the planned launches have already taken place.
Two distinct research facilities
PIK is located in Gatchina at the Petersburg Nuclear Physics Institute and serves neutron research. NICA, developed at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna, is an accelerator complex for heavy ions and protons. The facilities belong to distinct research programmes; their stated locations should remain separate when following the announced timetable.
A target is different from an operating milestone
The announcement gives a calendar objective for scientific infrastructure. Assessing its fulfilment would require later confirmation from the institutions responsible for the facilities. A statement made in September cannot itself establish an outcome scheduled for the end of the year.
- The announcement was reported on September 14, 2026.
- The timetable refers to the end of that year.
- PIK and NICA are distinct facilities in different locations.
- The statement should retain its attribution to the deputy prime minister.
What subsequent confirmation would need to explain
For a reader following a research project, the word “launch” can leave practical questions unanswered. Later institutional reporting would ideally identify what has started: an instrument, a stage of testing, a research programme or access for experimental users. These are possible reporting categories, not milestones asserted to have occurred at either facility.
A useful update would also distinguish the availability of infrastructure from the results of experiments performed with it. Opening access does not establish a particular scientific finding. Conversely, an announcement about one experimental result would not necessarily describe the readiness of an entire installation.
The immediate news is therefore the stated timetable for expanding research activity. It does not establish commercial revenue, industrial production or an approved schedule for any customer's project. Those conclusions would require separate information. Keeping the September statement tied to its date and speaker provides a clear point of comparison for later announcements without turning an intended year-end development into a completed achievement.
