Malaysia Rail Link is working towards opening the East Coast Rail Link to passengers as early as mid-December 2026, Bernama reported on 18 September. The company described progress in testing, while retaining an opening target rather than announcing that commercial service had begun. The project will connect the east coast of Malaysia with the Klang Valley.

Tests continue along the route

According to the September report, site acceptance testing was complete and system integration testing was about 80% complete. A further stage of running without faults was planned for October. These are distinct milestones: completing a site check does not mean every interacting railway system has finished its integration test.

The inspection programme is intended to examine the railway as an operating combination of track, power, trains and control systems. A test journey can provide evidence for that process without being a passenger timetable or a promise that tickets are available.

Fares remain subject to an official decision

A separate Bernama report on 7 September carried the company's warning that circulating fare information was inaccurate. Malaysia Rail Link said the Transport Ministry would announce the official fares after evaluation and approval, with an announcement expected by year-end.

The same statement gave expected journey times of about four hours from Kota Bharu to Gombak, three hours from Kuala Terengganu to Gombak and one hour 35 minutes from Kuantan to Gombak. Those projections describe travel time, not the price of a journey.

A staged project, with practical details still pending

Bernama's June background report described a 665-kilometre alignment through Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang into Selangor. It also recorded an earlier January 2027 opening expectation. The September target therefore represents an effort to advance the first passenger opening.

  • Testing progress identifies work completed on the railway.
  • The opening target identifies when public service may start.
  • The fare announcement will establish the official passenger charges.

For prospective travellers, these statements answer different questions. The September update supports a nearer opening ambition, while the actual start of ticket sales and approved charges still require their own official announcements.
